Sallie K. SmithSallie K. Smith did not make a serious attempt to become a professional painter until she was nearly 50. She had been drawing for years, encouraged by her mother, an artist, to look at things differently. She found inspiration from her childhood trips out West.“We visited Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming, spending our two week vacations camping, hiking, horseback riding and rock hounding. My mom painted. I fell in love with the Rockies and its mountains, rivers and big sky. When the family wagon headed back east across the Great Plains my little nose was plastered to the back window as the mountains slowly faded from view. I was never ready to leave.” She moved to Colorado in the late sixties but she still feels the same way when it comes time to leave the mountains and head back home. “When I started painting I realized that it allows me to linger. As an artist I develop an intimate relationship with the subjects I paint. I have a need to look deeply into them and will spend hours, or days, or weeks transferring what I have observed onto a canvas. We become close.” Smith’s paintings use color to communicate energy, light, and beauty. “I use rich color without apology…it is what I see and working with it gives me great pleasure.” Artwork
